About Unnecessary Enemies
The importance of this book is about the content of the book itself. Whether written by an author or computer, the focus is the message or messages within the book. It was not written for the purpose of taking sides or an all or nothing approach. The objective is for those who have opposing viewpoints on matters that affect a wide range of people, to consider a bridge in coming together to address the problem. If such a problem can’t be resolved based on values or belief, then that can be respected, while at the same time avoiding any unnecessary harm to the other.
The book was written before the horrific pandemic, Covid-19, which brought with it alliances and oppositions. Whichever side, it showed the need for communication and respect for a safe outcome. Safe outcomes in this regard can be observed as some opposing parties did indeed come together for what was best for the country. In recognizing those of opposing sides in this regard, it shows how people can put their differences aside in consideration of what is best for all.
Christianity and being gay
Being gay and Christian brings with it values and beliefs that are powerful and heartfelt, therefore, it’s by no means the book’s effort to eliminate such feelings and passions that each group has in their stance. In such conflicts lie those, like Mayson, are in the middle and left to pick a side. Such a middle ground can be tormenting in just about any situation, but when it comes to having to pick a side between 2 groups that represent your true self, it can be a life crisis.
In-the-middle Mayson and his mother, Phyllis, may represent more people than may be known. Therefore, it may be up to the Maysons and Phyllises of the world to communicate and collaborate with others who also find themselves in between such opposing communities. Hence, in such a matter, what may be considered for those who read this book is to establish a safe means of agreement in consistently reaching out to those who think differently than you. In addressing the differences, being mindful of the greater good has its place. The greater good being the peace and respect provided to those who may be suppressed, victimized or harmed by such division. For Mayson’s situation specifically, the greater good involves the actions of the religious institutions, same sex partners and the groups that support them coming together.
As the next generation merges into their adulthood, it’s hopeful that such contention between both sides is not carried into the next generation. Or, it may be the next generation who ends such a long conflict between some religious institutions, same sex couples and those involved in supporting one or the other.
The book is just one among many other efforts to bring people together rather than be a part of what divides. This novel may be a small effort, but its effort comes with true sincerity.
